1Password Firefox extension not working - solved!

Back in January, I went full Firefox. 🦊

The switch went great and everything worked well. Then, about 4 or so weeks ago the Firefox extension for 1Password just stopped working. Clicking on the extension icon did nothing and selecting login fields on webpages no longer showed 1Password suggestions.

When the classic uninstall/re-install advice from 1Password didn't resolve the issue and a few quick searches on Google also proved fruitless, I gave up. This was a minor inconvenience but because the 1Password desktop app was still working fine and I didn't want to waste any more time trying to fix it, I let it be.

This weekend, I found myself with some free time and decided to see if I could get to the bottom of the issue.

Firefox extension debugging

I noticed that when debugging the extension (Menu > Add-ons > Extensions (click settings icon) > Debug Add-ons) Firefox was showing a warning:

Reading manifest: Warning processing key: An unexpected property was found in the WebExtension manifest.

Unfortunately, this new info didn't yield any new results. I was sent down the same uninstall/re-install rabbit hole with a few new suggestions to try the latest beta versions of the app and extension. I didn't really want to do that as I knew the extension was working fine before.

Google search just wasn't helping, so I decided to try the 1Password Forum instead to see if there were any threads that I hadn't managed to find via Google...

Refresh Firefox

It didn't take me long to find a user with the same issue that I was having (albeit on PC - I'm on Mac). But the solution is simple, it worked for them on PC and it worked for my Mac, too: Refresh Firefox.

If you're having problems with Firefox, a refresh can help. Refreshing Firefox can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its default state, while saving your essential information like bookmarks,  passwords, and open tabs.

Once I'd completed the refresh and reinstalled the extension (the debug warning is still present) everything worked perfectly again! Woop! 🎉
